Security Superstars in the Spotlight series

The Intalock team is stacked with talent. To celebrate some of our security superstars, we asked them about their career choices and how they ended up employed in the cyber field. A dynamic industry requires a diversity of thought and opinion, and we hope you enjoy the variety of responses.

What was your early educational background and how did you end up working in cyber security?

I have worked in information security since 2010. I originally was interested in the field because I love uncovering and solving mysteries and cyber security allows me to explore that. As a child I watched lots of detective and mystery movies, so for me the best type of career would allow me to follow clues and solve problems. After school I studied a Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering, a five-year course that help set me up for my future employment.

Tell us a bit about your role and why you enjoy it.

I started out working with Intalock as a SOC Analyst and worked my way up to a more senior role. I love the flexibility of being able to work from home or on a hybrid arrangement. I gain the most satisfaction from mentoring and training new analysts to become effective at monitoring, triaging, and responding to threat alerts. I love helping the new hires expand their SOC knowledge and experience.

What are some of the pressures that come with being a SOC Analyst, and how do you deal with stress release?

Yes, there are times of stress working in a SOC environment. For me I like to listen to music during the workday and even sing along if I’m not on a call. On the weekend I like to travel on short trips and focus on getting exercise to improve my health and avoid being too sedentary.

What advice would you give other women looking to enter the cyber security industry?

From my perspective I have found there to be no gender bias in the industry at all, and I have always been afforded equal opportunity. I would encourage women to take a chance on a role in cyber security as a way to fulfill their potential and possibly have a great career.

What are your future career plans?

I plan to stay within cyber security and continue to explore further opportunities. I have been able to move ahead so far and hope to keep learning new skills and disciplines.
